Urban Re-Action
Describe the problem that you want to address. How does this problem effect people in their daily lives?
Cypriot cities suffer from a growing number of public spaces that are not being looked after by the Councils and are left to slowly decay, either as a result of bad design, lack of maintenance funds and/or lack of interest. These areas contribute towards an incoherent urban structure which leads to loss of civic pride. This project is a collaboration between Schedia and ARTos Foundation. It aims to discover, evaluate, catalogue and, subsequently reveal to the general public and local authorities alike, the potential of the city’s empty public spaces.
The project operates on the following levels: (1) It is a live, online and open source archive listing all major empty, unused, forgotten public spaces in Nicosia; (2) It is a simple strategy that can influence the actual, real use of public urban space and the engagement of the wider public with issues of urban space, as a good practice of blending creative actions and the citizens; (3) It puts these forgotten spaces on the mental map of the city and raise their profile with both the public and the city authorities; (4) The activities will function as mini-feasibility studies of potential new functions for these spaces; (5) The project will operate through a structured network with universities (department of Architecture and Urban Design), creative thinkers, designers, urbanists, architects, artists, curators, citizens, NGOs; (6) It aims to share good practices with the rest of the regions that are part of the program; (7) The project will remain open and we aim to keep it growing and enlarging, giving the opportunity to the citizens to enlarge their limited possibilities and/or innovative usages of abandoned places; (8) Contribute in setting up a prototype which will include: an e-platform, network, researchers and a number of actions.
Describe your proposed solution – How does your approach build on or add to more traditional ways of dealing with problem?

The project team will investigate the gaps in the Cypriot urban fabric. Specifically, it will focus on public spaces/ areas that are unused, have been abandoned and left behind while development has taken place around them. We will develop an informal planning strategy based on a series of temporary urban and cultural activities taking place in these spaces and in the long run providing a collective tool that can be used to pressurise local authorities’ decision making processes. Finally, we aim to foster a shared platform for ideas and dialogue between experts, citizens, policymakers and local government. Steps: (1) Map major empty/unused spaces, (2) Categorise and archive these spaces, (3) Organise temporary events in these spaces, (4) Record and collate all the activities, (5) Develop, design & launch application as an open platform, (6) Presentation of project in a publication, (7) Share good practices and methodologies with the rest of the network.
